Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate

Hi, my name is Rebecca Cunningham. I view therapy as a sacred honor as clients take the risk of trusting someone new with their story. This is not an easy task. My approach is warm, curious, and reflective. I believe that as humans, we are inherently designed for relationships. When we are not well connected to ourself and others, everything suffers. The core of dynamic counseling and an effective change process, is a strong therapeutic relationship. This is what I love to offer. Moving towards lasting change with clients, is accomplished by together discovering how to work through trial, and journey towards hope.
With an emphasis on attachment, narrative, and emotionally focused theories, I desire to help individuals face disappointment, grief, fear, and uncertainty in a way that repurposes their pain as they discover more of their true self. I employ evidence-based approaches and a belief that the unique life stories that each individual carries, are best navigated within the safety of relational connection. When difficulties in these close relationships occur, we struggle in numerous domains as our minds, souls, and bodies are intricately connected. It is essential to have a safe place to process these challenges and receive support. We are not made to navigate life alone. By better understanding how our past has shaped us, we can approach reality in a way that uses insight into who we are, as a catalyst for who we can continue to become. By employing psychodynamic approaches, clients are empowered to resolve present struggles by exploring how prior experiences and emotions have shaped and impacted current functioning. This leads to longer lasting change.
My areas of experience include relationships, trauma, anxiety, crisis management, and depression. I have spent time working with children, adolescents, teens, and parents, maneuvering difficulties in their relationships with one another, as well as their own personal challenges. I have worked with females navigating abuse dynamics, as well as individuals desiring to better understand their family of origin and past, in order to better navigate their present and future. I adopt a person centered approach and see the therapeutic relationship as a vital place of learning and relearning about relational health and unconditional positive regard.
For those who desire, I offer Christian counseling and integrate faith based care into sessions.
I have my bachelors degree from Biola University and my masters from Liberty University. I grew up in Whatcom County, and spent the subsequent years living in Southern California and Germany. After moving back to Bellingham, I have spent my time working at Catholic Community Services in the Northwest, providing clinical outpatient care to children, families, and young adults. In my free time I love trail running, traveling, reading, and spending time with friends and family.
